How to Tell the Story of Your Dog Show — Series Introduction (Copy)

The Dog World Has a Story to Tell. Let’s Tell It.

A few weeks ago, I attended a specialty that had everything going for it—an enthusiastic club, beautiful dogs, a welcoming venue and a solid Facebook presence. But when I looked beyond the posts and ribbons, something was missing.

There was no media coverage.

No community outreach.

No effort to engage the world beyond our sport.

And that felt like a real loss—for the local club that worked so hard to host the event, for the venue that welcomed us and for the breed itself, which deserves a broader spotlight.

That experience sparked this blog series.

Why Communications Matter in the Fancy

We put months of planning into a single show weekend. But without a communication strategy, even our best events can go unseen.

Effective PR isn’t about hype—it’s about helping the public understand what we do, why it matters and how to be part of it. It drives attendance, attracts future exhibitors, supports venues and sponsors and builds momentum for your breed.

You don’t need a marketing department.

Just a smart plan, a few key tools—and sometimes, a little outside help.

What This Series Covers

This blog series is built for club officers, volunteers, breeders and exhibitors who want to make sure their efforts aren’t missed. It breaks PR and communications down into four easy, actionable pieces:

  • Press releases and media advisories – What to write, when to send and how to get coverage

  • Crisis communications – What to say when something unexpected happens

  • How to pitch your event – Getting past the inbox and into the press

  • Post-show momentum – How to extend your visibility long after the ribbons are awarded

These posts are short, practical and designed to help you make a bigger impact—without burning out your board or adding another job to your to-do list.

The dog show world is full of extraordinary moments. Let’s make sure more people see them.

This is where we start.
