🧳 Ringside Must-Haves

The essentials I never leave home without β€” whether I’m heading to a local show or a national specialty. If you’re new to showing, this checklist will make your setup smoother and stress-free.

  • β€’ Bait – Bring more than you think you’ll need, in small, soft pieces your dog loves. Avoid crumbly treats β€” you don’t want debris in the ring or on your hands.

β€’ Bait container or pouch – A magnetic pouch or small container keeps bait fresh and off your clothes.

β€’ Backup bait – Sometimes dogs get bored with one flavor β€” or another dog near you has something better.

β€’ Number clip or elastic bands – Useful to have backups or take two from the desk when you pickup your armband.

β€’ Show lead (plus a backup) – Leads fail. Backups save the day.

β€’ Towel or ring mat – To protect your dog’s coat and keep them clean pre-ring.

β€’ Comb or slicker brush – Final touch-ups right before entering.

β€’ Spray bottle with water – For fluffing coats or cooling down.

β€’ Baby wipes – For wiping feet, cleaning up, or emergency stain fixes (even on your outfit).

    β€’ Paper towels or tissues – A multi-use must.

β€’ Poop bags – Always bring extras.

β€’ Ziploc or photo slip folder – For organizing ribbons, paperwork and judging schedules.

β€’ Your own bottled water (for your dog) – Many dogs dislike unfamiliar water and may not drink enough without it.

  • β€’ Ring schedule printout or screenshot – Don’t rely solely on posted signs or Wi-Fi.

β€’ Portable phone charger or power bank – You’ll likely be using your phone all day for photos, schedules, or updates.

β€’ Show catalog (if available) – To track other entries, groups or judge progress.

β€’ Non-slip, comfortable shoes – You’ll be moving quickly on sometimes slick surfaces.

β€’ Mirror or β€œfit check” buddy – A final once-over before heading in the ring.

β€’ Breath mints or gum – Helps calm nerves and keeps things fresh when chatting with judges or fellow handlers. Doubles as a nervous energy fix.

β€’ Hair ties, safety pins, or a mini sewing kit – Small emergencies, solved.

β€’ Water and snacks for you – Food vendors may be far, expensive, or nonexistent.

β€’ Phone Notes app – Keep track of ring times, armband numbers, judge changes, or helpful contacts.

  • β€’ Tack box or organized tote – Makes setup and cleanup more efficient.

β€’ Breed-specific grooming tools – Chalk, rakes, combs, sprays, whatever your dog needs.

β€’ Lint roller – Great for dark suits and light dogs, or vice versa.

β€’ Small mirror (for dog) – Spot-checks for clean faces, tidy feet, or show-ready coats.

β€’ Travel-size stain remover – For both handler and dog. Baby Wipes work miracles.

β€’ Backup socks or pantyhose – Because stuff happens.

β€’ Small cooler or insulated bag – Keeps your drinks, dog treats, or grooming items fresh and handy.
